“Working LARGE; Working RAW” Summer 2019 Workshops

The Working LARGE; Working RAW Summer 2019 Workshops are coming up; a gathering of creative minds and spirits – we’ll make it fun and productive. Having the opportunity to work 4 days continuously and uninterrupted is a very effective way to move your skills forward. Whatever your current skill level, you will make progress.

This post is for participants in the Working LARGE; Working RAW Workshops at GAS. It is intended to provide information to help you to prepare for and get the most out of your workshop. In this post you will find the following:

  • Getting ready for the workshop;
  • Suggested supply list
  • Overview of dates, times, and more
  • Payment information
Getting Ready for the Workshop:

The focus for these workshops is to enable you to experiment freely, to give you the time to work more intensely than what you usually do, to work on projects that take longer to process.  You are encouraged to experiment with non-traditional surfaces (raw?) and we will explore methods to bring elements of those surfaces into your work. I am preparing a few exercises that I hope will inspire you. However, most of the class time will be dedicated to individual work. As always, there will be critiques – both individual and group.

I encourage you to give some thought to the direction that you would like to head in the workshop. Optional: consider doing a little prep on your surfaces ahead of time – perhaps a couple of coats of gesso?? A little staining? Sanding? A little surface building pre-workshop can help you move quickly into the heart of your project.

You will have 4 continuous days to work; you can leave all your materials and tools at the gallery throughout the session. Being summer, you will have the option of working out in the back lane way – to pour and drip – if you so choose.

Suggested Supply List:
  • Your work surface(s) – be prepared to work on multiple projects. Consider alternative materials: rolled paper, raw canvas tacked directly to the wall, found material, diptychs/triptychs.
  • Paints: acrylics paints, acrylic mediums, other compatible media such as pencils, pens, charcoal, watercolour crayons, pastels, markers
  • Tools: brushes, knives, scrapers, rags, sponges – larger tools for larger surfaces!
  • Equipment: Palette, water container, spray bottle
  • Extras: Apron, gloves, paper towels or rags
  • If you are planning to get extra messy, maybe bring a floor/surface protector? Lightweight plastic drop sheets (from the $$ store?) are useful for protecting both walls and floors.
  • Food and drink: You will work hard and it is a long day, it is important to nourish your body as well as your soul. Bring food from home, or plan to visit the local shops and restaurants. Bring your own large mug for coffee from the corner coffee shop!
