How often have you heard “if you get the values right, nothing else really matters,” but the other equally correct statement is “if you get the values wrong, nothing else really matters.” Values are about light and dark, how simple is that?

My goal in this module is the demystify values, all while having fun working with them. I am calling this module a “The VALUE Party”.

Listen as I explain in this quick video….

BONUS: In Conversation with Betsy and Dawna

Betsy Rosenwald and Dawna Rose, the artists who created the Journal of the Plague Year, generously met with our group via ZOOM.

See and Listen again....

  • Chapter 1: Conversation in black and white

In this chapter, we delve into the many roles that values play in your painting, from inviting and welcoming your “guests” to making your painting memorable. A painting is made up of assorted “conversations” – the exercise will encourage you to practice building these VALUE conversations. We will meet Canadian artists who create very LOUD conversations in their artwork. In fact, we will truly meet them via ZOOM.

  • Chapter 2: Designing with value conversations

In this chapter we take the next steps and focus on the arrangement of value conversations. How can the conversations engage, amuse, and hold the viewer within your artwork? The featured artist creates big bold mostly abstracted work. We will explore her work and guess what – you will be presented with an opportunity to experience her work in real life.

  • Chapter 3: The role of COLOUR in value conversations

Colour is fun, it is the reason many of us paint. This week we play with it and figure out how it fits into the value party. The featured artist has been controversial since day one and uses colours boldly in her artwork and statements.

  • Chapter 4: Making it memorable.

We will study a newly discovered, but memorable artist. We continue working and playing with colour focusing on wrapping up all the value details of the previous chapters. The goal – create MEMORABLE artwork.
