The Unexpected

Doing the unexpected can add a completely different element to your artwork
Break some rules, present unusual subject matter, use different materials

Plan it, or simply allow it to happen spontaneously

In this module you will meet 4 artists, for whom doing the unexpected is the norm

Let them surprise you

Sometimes the surprise is immediately available to you, while with others, you will find yourself drawn in by something intriguing and mysterious, leading to deeper study. Let’s look at their inspiration and thought processes, and of course their final products.

It's your turn, add an unexpected twist to your artwork

Registration is now open:

Classes will run for 4 weeks, starting as follows:

  • Chapter #1: Bold Emotions

We’ll study an artist who uses colour washes alongside playing with alternative light sources to present strong and often uncomfortable emotions

  • Chapter #2: Creating Characters

Our featured artist creates a fictional character and leaves it to them to tell his stories. He then brings himself into the story too, unexpected in every way

  • Chapter #3: Abstracted Landscapes

Do you enjoy painting landscapes? But all around you, others are working abstractly…  watch as this artists pulls them together for intriguing and unexpected results

  • Chapter #4: Imagination and Memory

“I just go to bed, close my eyes and see things. I get up the next morning—spend the day fishing, then that night I paint the canvas as it was seen. In fact, I sense that I have very little to do with what is put down on the canvas.” This artist’s work is unexpected, even to himself
