Abstraction is about ideas and thoughts and emotions

Abstraction is a spectrum – starting with small moves away from realism, and reaching all the way to completely non-objective. Abstraction is about expressing ideas and thoughts. In this 4-week module, we will explore the work of 4 successful artists, who work at various places along the abstract spectrum. What inspires them? What are their processes?  Regardless of where you currently are on the abstract spectrum, whether you are taking your first tentative steps along the path or if you are already working completely non-objectively, I hope to inspire you to try something more. The focus is primarily on inspiration and process.

  • Chapter 1: Intuition and Art Theory

Be present in your artwork, make it personal. Bring your intuition: set yourself up to be spontaneous while combining it with your knowledge of core art theory.

  • Chapter 2: Light Up Your Imagination

We'll take a fun and lighthearted look at colour field work, and how to light it up - from behind.

  • Chapter 3: Mysterious Surfaces

Surfaces play an important role in abstract work. We will explore approaches for constructing and imbedding; create mysterious surfaces that will implore viewers to ask  "How did the artist do that?"

  • Chapter 4: Use MOTION to create Energy and Emotion

The Abstract Expressionist movement dominated the 50's and 60's. Ever since then, abstract painters have found innovative ways to move in new and different directions - we'll explore how to incorporate motion into abstraction.
